Cool Class: This Course Is Improving Students' Mental HealthThe instructors hope students utilize skills learned in the classroom, but also spread their knowledge across the campus community — and, eventually, beyond.
Alumni of the course even created the Healthy Minds on Campus. Olson serves as communication director for the group. This student organization is open to all students and is rooted in the central tenets of the course. Healthy Minds on Campus is dedicated to improving the well-being of students at UW-Madison, and the senior class of 2023 wants to highlight the organization’s commitment to mental health.
“I think it’s really important signal, really, that we all have to listen to, and I think the support of students has to be a collective effort from many different parts of campus and our area of expertise is mental well-being and we have a lot of research that supports that,” says Susan Huber, Director of Well-Being in Higher Education at the Center for Healthy Minds. Daily Cardinal: "Center for Healthy Minds Higher Education Fund to receive 2023 senior class gift"The 2023 Senior Class Office selected the Center for Healthy Minds, an organization focused on research regarding mental health and well-being, to receive their annual gift.
Emily Tesch, a team coordinator and administrator for Healthy Minds on Campus, participated in the Letters and Science course her freshman year. Founding the student organization began with conversations between individuals who took the course during their first year. “It gave us a toolkit of how to deal with life and how to see the world around us, and was so impactful to all of us that we really thought that it would be great if that message could reach more students and have a broader impact on campus beyond just freshman,” Tesch said. Read More Day of The Badger 2023During UW-Madison's Day of the Badger 2023 celebration, the Center for Healthy Minds raised over $13,000 in donations to support the development of Healthy Minds on Campus. The donations received support the student organization's mission to provide a space for all students to discuss and learn about evidence-based practices related to the Center for Healthy Minds’s four pillars of well-being: awareness, connection, insight, and purpose.
